Five Remarkable “W’s” marked the path of the West Coast Classic Champions, ending in Paco Martinez’ U15 White team’s second tournament win in the month of August. Offensively, 11 goals were logged by forwards Katrina (3), Aaliyah & Karlie, midfielders Scarlett (2), Kendall (2) & Ayleen, and defender Morgan. The highlight of the tournament, however, proved Martinez’ defense. Keeper Marbely Puga and defenders Abbi, Casey, Kendall, Leeta and Morgan allowed only a single goal to opposing teams over five games. The goal was scored by the OC Surf South DPL team during the first half of the semi-final game. Puga’s defense denied all other attempts, but Martinez’ OC Surf North team struggled to score. Midway through the second half, forward Katrina Vidal helped create an “own goal” situation: The game was tied 1-1. Vidal scored the winning goal minutes later for a 2-1 win and a bid for the championship. This final game was to be a repeat grudge match of a similar bracket game against the Hotspurs. Twice the Spurs proved unable to keep midfielder/ defender Kendall Bettis out of their net, resulting in Surf North’s second 2-0 win over the Spurs. Martinez Surf girls proved the team that could not be beaten. Congratulations to Coach and team for another excellent tournament championship win!
